A Grace-Filled Life
Sr. Mary Luke Jones
I live with over 40 women who are bursting with talent. We have singers, artists, liturgists, administrators, organizers, humorists, cooks, gardeners, counselors, builders, peacemakers, pray-ers, writers, nurses, teachers, poets, musicians, party planners and financiers. The most beautiful thing about living in their midst is that each and every one of them uses her talent for the common good.
As you can imagine, it takes all of us to make our community work and our service to others helpful and worthwhile. I think I can safely say that many of us were called or asked to step out of our comfort zone to take on a task we did not know we could do. Why did we respond?
There are two reasons, I think. One, because there was a need in the community and two, because we had the support and affirmation of the sisters around us. When a need arises, the prioress looks around and thinks, “Who could take this on? Who could do this?”
After discernment and prayer, perhaps education and training, the sister responds with a wholehearted “Yes” knowing she will be using her talent for others. With that fiat comes the encouragement, assistance and help she needs to succeed.
All for the common good.
